What are allergies? ...

Allergies are an overreaction of the immune system to a substance that is normally harmless. These substances, called allergens, can be found in food, airborne particles like pollen, mold, and animal dander, as well as certain medications, insect venom, and even materials like latex.

When a person with allergies comes into contact with an allergen, the immune system produces an antibody called immunoglobulin E (IgE) in response. This triggers the release of histamine and other chemicals in the body, which causes inflammation and a variety of symptoms like itching, sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, hives, and in severe cases, anaphylaxis, which is a potentially life-threatening reaction that can cause difficulty breathing, a drop in blood pressure, and loss of consciousness.

Allergies can develop at any age and can range from mild to severe. They are often treated with medications like antihistamines, decongestants, and corticosteroids, as well as allergy shots, which can help desensitize the immune system to specific allergens over time.
